Centro para Estudios Teológicos

Conocimiento, Investigación, Comunidad

Our mission: To educate the next generation of progressive religious leaders in the borderlands.
Centro Romero has developed an innovative curriculum that combines grounding in traditional fields of theological studies with the contextual ministerial realities of the border region. Based on Paulos Freire’s model reflection, action, reflection CET programs encourage the student to apply the subjects learned in the classroom to the context of the broader community.

Masters Program

This degree is designed for already credentialed and practicing ministry professionals (lay, religious, ordained) who wish to foster self-improvement and motivation in the pursuit of theological education as an end in itself or in preparation for doctoral studies. With a specialized focus upon a specific theological agenda, the M.Th. is ideally suited to the ministry professional who desires to update previous ministry training with particular attention to theological refinement. The residence sessions involve graduate-level course work and are coupled with the writing of the Master of Theology thesis.

This degree is a 30-credit program that may be completed in no less than eighteen months and no more than four years.

Bachelors Degree Program

The CET undergraduate program allows students to maintain their professional positions while completing a bachelor’s degree in one of three areas: religious education, theology or pastoral care and counseling. Specialized degree tracks are available for some degree programs to allow focused study in a particular area. A range of study options is also available to help students craft their own educational study plan. CET awards professional baccalaureate degrees and a liberal arts degree: B.R.E. or, Bachelor of Religious Education, B.Th. or Bachelor of Theology and, B.A. Bachelors of Art in Pastoral Care and Counseling, which are built upon practical skills needed to function professionally within the student’s chosen field. CET makes a distinction between a professional baccalaureate degree and a liberal arts degree.

While a liberal arts education attempts to provide a broad foundation of general studies, the professional degree provides a concentration in practical skills, which may be exercised in the student’s profession.

Certificate Program

This program of special courses and seminars provides progressive, accessible Christian theological education year round for clergy, laity, and spiritual seekers. Our certificate program can be engaged at the level that works for the student – for personal spiritual formation, lay leadership training, professional growth, or continuing education.

D.Min. Program

The Doctor of Ministry degree is an accepted terminal professional degree for ministry professionals. The CET D.Min. program lies in its educational model that provides maximum flexibility. Students can pursue a highly individualized and specialized program of studies, choosing from a wide variety of study options. CET offers a practice-oriented D.Min. in an environment that is supportive, nurturing, and fully interreligious.

This degree is a 30-credit program that may be completed in no less than eighteen months and no more than four years.
